The atmosphere at their home stadium was anything but joyful on Saturday afternoon. Lazio were trailing against Torino, a side that had conceded 10 goals while scoring only two in their previous five league matches. Fans from the Curva Nord were concluding their most recent demonstration in an ongoing feud with chairman Claudio Lotito.
A Season Falling Apart?
Was Lazio's season falling apart, or had there never been a thread holding it together in the first place? Lazio reinstated Maurizio Sarri as head coach during the off-season, before he to later acknowledge that the club had failed to disclose the transfer ban they were set to be hit with for financial irregularities. Reports that he might quit were unfounded, but he stated that Lotito had "misled" him.
Lazio were just as chaotic in their performances as behind the scenes, beating Verona 4-0 and Genoa 3-0 but losing the rest of their first five games, featuring the derby della Capitale. At any given moment, it has been hard to tell if they're getting better or collapsing.
Matteo's Unexpected Presence
At least one man remained positive through it. Matteo Cancellieri was not even supposed to be at Lazio this season. He was on last season on loan at Parma and, at the start of the off-season, Lazio were advocating for him to stay there temporarily. The registration embargo necessitated a reconsideration. They were unable to thin their squad without replacements.
Cancellieri arrived initially when Sarri was last in charge, back then just 20 years old alumnus of Verona's academy. He recorded 20 matches in the league with the club in the 2022-23 season, almost all of those coming off the bench. The ex- sporting director, Igli Tare, who departed after that campaign, would later accuse Sarri of "telling everyone Cancellieri was destined for stardom then never playing him."
Discovering His True Position
Maybe Sarri was persistently working to work out the nature of his skill set. Originally described as a wide forward on arrival, Cancellieri yet was deployed for the majority of that term as an unconvincing alternative to Ciro Immobile as center forward. Across 63 games on loan at Empoli and Parma during recent campaigns, his tally was seven goals. Shoehorn
