Micky van de Ven found the net on two occasions as Spurs extended their winning streak on the road in the Premier League and handed Everton their first defeat at their new home.

The Toffees were unbeaten in their last five matches at their recently opened stadium at the dockside location, having departed their historic home behind after 133 years at the conclusion of last season.

But Tottenham's leader the Dutchman struck twice from corners in the opening 45 minutes to put their impressive record at risk, and they were unable to turn it around before Pape Matar Sarr - set up by former Toffees attacker the Brazilian - headed home a final goal to seal the victory.

The Everton defender believed he had levelled the scores five minutes after the defender's first goal, directing a powerful header past the Spurs keeper from an set-piece.

The Portuguese striker, meanwhile, missed a handful of chances, while the Italian goalkeeper made a series of excellent saves to guarantee the London club went five away games without defeat in the English top flight.

But the video assistant referee stepped in, instructing Craig Pawson to review the score on the pitchside monitor and the referee ruled that the winger and the attacker were in an illegal position and had impeded with the Spurs keeper.

This victory moves the manager's team up to third in the division, five points off north London rivals and table-toppers Arsenal.

The Merseyside club remain in 14th position and are half a dozen points clear of the relegation zone.

Tottenham analysis: Van de Ven excels in role at each end of the field

Following a uninspiring midweek display in the European competition against the French side, where they mustered a only two shots on goal, the manager opted for Randal Kolo Muani in attack instead of ex-Everton forward Richarlison.

The summer signing was unable to make much of an impact before being replaced for Richarlison after an hour on the field, but it emerged he proved unnecessary in the final outcome.

Defender Van de Ven converted into an offensive threat to be reckoned with.

Spurs' opening strike came from a cleverly executed corner routine, with the midfielder directing the ball toward the six-yard box for an unmarked the defender to score.

And the captain - filling in as skipper in the Argentine's absence - notched his second in added time as he rose above the England keeper to head home.

Van de Ven was equally impressive in defensive duties, combining effectively with his defensive colleague as the duo handled excellently with the 34 crosses sent their way by the opposition.

Toffees breakdown: Toffees missing striker's instinct

Everton's recent stadium had been a fortress, but it appears the freshness may have faded somewhat and fans flocked to the exits after the midfielder's final goal for Spurs.

The break in Everton's unbeaten home run won't be a major concern for David Moyes, but their striker situation are.

The forward and the other striker - the Everton's two established centre-forwards - had scored only a single goal between them before the weekend's outing.

And they were unable to contribute to that miserable tally on a wet and gloomy evening on in Liverpool.

The striker's performance was summed up when he opted to overhead kick a golden opportunity from close range, even with having room and opportunity to readjust for a more conventional attempt that would have tested Vicario.

The substitute, as well, failed to influence the game after replacing Beto in the second half.

It wasn't for a lack of opportunity. Most of Everton's attacks came through Grealish and the forward, who relentlessly delivered threatening balls into the Spurs box.
