No fewer than 13 people killed and 98 hurt in train derailment in Mexico.

A fatal railway accident in the Mexican state of Oaxaca has resulted in the deaths of at least 13 people, an incident expected to reignite censure from critics regarding the speed and management of the country's major infrastructure initiatives.

The accident occurred on the trans-isthmus railway, a route constructed to join the Atlantic Ocean and Pacific across the narrowest part of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This project was intended to establish an alternative rail cargo route to the Panama Canal, intended to promote economic development in the area.

“We are going to rigorously clarify what caused this accident,” stated the national leader.

The leader reported that, of the some 250 passengers on board, another 98 were hurt, with five of those in serious condition. The official added plans to visit Oaxaca to confer with those impacted.

Flagship Project of Previous Administration

The Interoceanic Train was a cornerstone public works project of the former leader, whose presidency finished the previous year. This project was a hallmark of his government's strategic agenda for the southern region.

Another multi-billion dollar rail project from that time, a tourist and cargo loop around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also part of the broader strategy to revitalize the economic fortunes of a relatively disadvantaged part of the country.

Building Management and Safety Concerns

The building of both rail lines was managed by the nation's military, marking a significant growth of its role in civilian infrastructure. They were executed at an fast-tracked pace, beating forecasts to be partially inaugurated before the end of that government.

However, this rushed timetable had simultaneously fueled significant questions over operational security.

  • Sunday's derailment was the third event on the Interoceanic Train in the current year.
  • This involves an prior collision this month when a train hit a truck at a railroad crossing.
  • The other major rail project has also experienced two non-fatal derailments.

Demands for Audit and Pause

In the wake of the disaster, the head of a primary political opposition demanded an prompt halt in the development and management of all such projects.

This stoppage was proposed pending a full independent investigation. The party emphasized that the tragedy "calls for swift accountability."

In reply, the president maintained that the train had been functioning in complete adherence to all security protocols. Commitments were given that the government would continue to be "diligent" in both the construction and running of these vital undertakings.
