New research reveals that individuals who come off new weight-loss injections like Mounjaro or Wegovy may regain lost weight at a significantly accelerated pace than those who stop conventional lifestyle regimens.
Published data in a major medical journal points out that while overweight individuals can lose about a fifth of their body weight while using the jabs, the mass comes back at an estimated rate of nearly a kilo each month after stopping.
"Individuals purchasing such drugs should be informed of the potential of rapid weight regain when the treatment concludes," cautioned expert Dr. Susan Jebb.
This pace of regain means a return to pre-treatment mass in about one and a half years.
Weighing Therapies
The analysis, which reviewed 37 of studies involving thousands of participants, compared the effects of these new drugs with other pills.
Researchers emphasize that individuals who shed pounds through diet and exercise typically have a more gradual creep back—around 0.1 kg a month—once they finish.
Understanding the Fast Regain
Nutrition scientists suggest the way of the injections explains the heightened rebound.
The injections copy a body's own chemical called glucagon-like peptide-1, which controls hunger.
"Artificially providing the hormone levels several times higher than normal could lead to the body to produce less of its endogenous hormone, and could reduce sensitivity to its actions," said Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition specialist.
"Withdrawal of this medication results in appetite is uncontrolled, making binge eating far more likely."
A Chronic Issue?
The NHS recommend the jabs for people with obesity-related medical conditions, alongside recommended lifestyle changes.
A number of clinicians argue that, due to the high risk of relapse, the treatment might need to be life-long.
This opinion is reinforced by pharmaceutical companies, who note that the findings "underscore the long-term character of obesity," comparing it to managing diseases like diabetes.
User Testimonies
People who have come off the medication describe a powerful resurgence of appetite.
"I experienced a trigger flipping and I was suddenly starving," recalled one woman.
This challenge is worsened if users have not developed lasting lifestyle or habit changes during treatment.
Widespread Adoption
Survey data show that a significant number of people in the UK have used these injections in the last 12 months, with demand remaining high.
- Adoption is more common among females compared to men.
- The 40s and 50s demographic shows the highest level of interest.
- A large proportion access the medications through private healthcare rather than the NHS.
Ultimately, experts caution that while GLP-1 drugs are powerful tools for weight loss, they are not a standalone cure and maintained weight loss hinges on ongoing behavioural changes.
